Turkey’s Freedom of Expression and Thought Agenda (November 26 – December 2, 2022)

  • Woman who took the streets in The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women at 25th of November were subjected to police violence. Governorates banned protests in 2 provinces of Istanbul and 3 other cities. According to the data of the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey, at least 380 people were detained.
  • The Indictment against Turkish Medical Bar Association’s President Prof. Dr Şebnem Korur Fincancı was accepted by the court. The first hearing of the case will be held on 23th of December.
  • A lawsuit was filed against actress Farah Zeynep Abdullah who supported her colleague Ezgi Mola. Mola had sentenced for insulting Musa O. an ex-specialist sergeant who was found guilty of “qualified sexual assault” 
  • After Supreme Court´s decision to overturn, journalists Şahin Alpay, Ali Bulaç  Mümtazer Türköne ve Ahmet Turan Alkan sentenced to prison in Zaman Newspaper case for “aiding terrorist organization”.
  • The first trial of 40 women who were beaten and taken into custody in 8th March Protest was held.
  • Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against Etkin News Agency  with the allegation of “aiding terrorist organization”.
  • 6 separate cases against conscientious objector Mayis Aru resulted with 6 separate convictions. Aru was sentenced to 10 months in prison and fined 500 liras.
  • Actor İlyas Salman who has been accused of “insulting the state” because of what he said in a video interview was acquitted.
  • Journalist Zübeyde Sarı who has been accused of “public incitement to hatred and enmity” because of her social media posts was acquitted.
  • A lawsuit is filed against citizens attending a protest for Deniz Poyraz who was killed in an attack on People’s Democratic Party building in İzmir. The slogans they shouted and banners carried were admitted as evidence for “terrorist propaganda”. 
  • A lawsuit was filed against people who retweeted the tweets about a case against Deniz Poyraz’s father Abdulilah Poyraz for “targeting people involved in the fight against terrorism”.
  • An investigation against a mayor’s brother about an alleged attack on Şarköy’s Ses Newspapers editor Deniz Önal closed by the prosecutor within 18 days because of the lack of “sufficient and convincing evidence”. 
  • Journalist Hacı Boğatekin’s appeal to a fine was rejected by the Supreme Court. The journalist was fined because of a writing published in 2011 criticizing parliament member Mehmet Metiner.
  • The Ministry of Interior launched an investigation against Bursa Nilüfer Municipality after the news that the institution opened counseling centers for LGBTİ+ citizens.
