Soldiers opened fire against villagers executing border trade in Çemekurk village of Derecik, Hakkari. 14-year-old Vedat Ekinci lost his life and another person was heavily wounded. Ekinci’s cousin, witnessing the incident, stated, “Nobody said ‘stop’ or anything like that. The soldier has seen us, he knew that we were villagers. I begged that they would call an ambulance, but they didn’t.” In the statement made by the Governorate, the incident was claimed to have happened due to “a ricochet bullet as the terrain is rough and rocky.” The statement didn’t include any information on whether any legal action was taken against the perpetrator soldiers or not.

“This incident is a result of the policy of impunity. If accounts were asked on the Roboski Massacre, we wouldn’t be experiencing new Roboski’s today,” Hakkari MP Sait Dede stated.
