The Freedom of Musical Expression – Freemuse has reported the violations against artistic freedom of expression around the world with the report, The State of Artistic Freedom 2021. The report analyses 978 violations of artistic freedom in 89 countries that happened in the year 2020. According to the report, 17 artists were killed, 82 artists were imprisoned and 133 artists were detained across the world last year. 74 percent of all documented imprisonment sentences against artists were about their criticisms against government policies and applications. 44 percent of all imprisonment sentences happened in the Middle East and Northern Africa. Politics was the main reason for the arrest of artists, with 71 percent.

According to the report, Turkish government authorities, who are responsible for 90 percent of all artistic freedom of expression violations in Turkey, continue to remain a big obstacle in front of the use of artistic freedom. More than half of the violations against artistic freedom of expression in Turkey, which were documented by Freemuse, are based on the Anti-Terror Law and the “crime” of insulting the President.
