The Independent Communication Network (BIA) launched its Media Monitoring Report for the first quarter of 2021. According to the report, at least 228 journalists continued to be prosecuted due to 24 different charges, but especially due to “illegal organisation membership” and “making illegal organisation propaganda” in 83 lawsuits in the first three months of the year. Nine journalists were convicted. Lawsuits were filed against four cartoonists and one journalist due to “insulting the President” through sharing their opinions about and criticisms against Erdoğan. At least 149 news links were banned from access in the first quarter of 2021. The Radio and Television Supreme Council issued 57 administrative fines and 22 broadcast bans against TV channels in total. The Press Ad Institute issued ad bans against two newspapers. Under the atmosphere of impunity induced by the ruling power, 12 more journalists were attacked and one radio programmer was killed.
