Criminal Judicature of Peace issues access ban on Parliamentary summary

Ankara 8th Criminal Judicature of Peace brought an access ban on 56 different URLs with the news on Gündem Daily’s Bitlis reporter Ferhat Tepe, who was kidnapped and killed in 1993.

The verdict issued by the judicature on “violating personal rights” includes the banning of a website depicting a summary of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, dated September 1, 1992 on page 47. The summary includes letters of 10 MPs, demanding the opening of a Parliamentary research. On the other hand, the judicature demanded the access ban of the Turkish translation of a European Court of Human Rights verdict on murder in 2003, whereas the page was not banned due to the lack of compliance by the Access Providers Association.

Prof. Dr. Yaman Akdeniz shared the access ban verdicts regularly on his Twitter account and described them as a “scary and serious case of censorship”. Here are some of the other banned content:

  • The page including the records on Ferhat Tepe in the Database on the Fight Against Impunity, prepared by Diyarbakır Bar Association.

  • The column written by Faruk Arhan on July 28, 2010 on Bianet, entitled, “A counter guerrilla murder: Ferhat Tepe” and the news article, published on July 21, 2018 with the title, “We don’t accept time limitation in file of Ferhat Tepe.”

  • The news article published on BirGün on February 9, 2011 with the title, “Ishak Tepe after his son killed: I am suing Korkmaz Tağma.”

  • The article written by Çiğden Toker for Cumhuriyet on July 16, 2016, entitled, “Why is the Ferhat Tepe file closed?”

  • Journalist Mehveş Evin’s article, dated August 3, 2013 with the title, “Ferhat”.

  • The news article published on July 30, 2011 with the title, “Saturday Mothers ask perpetrators of Ferhat Tepe murder.”
