Bülent Şık Case

The 7th of our Judging the Judiciary cases focuses on Bülent Şık, who wrote about the cancer research which was covered up by the Ministry of Health. Assistant Professor Şık has published the results of the research, stating that 'a scientist is responsible for the society above all, not for corporations or associations.' Those who are responsible for endangering public health are clearly stated in the research. While those findings were not even investigated; Bülent Şık is accused of revealing 'state secrets' concerning cancerous chemical measurements. The prosecution has asked for a sentence up to 12 years of imprisonment....

Ferhat Tepe and Access Blocks

Bitlis reporter of the Gundem Journal, Ferhat Tepe was kidnapped and killed in 28 July 1993. The file was closed due to limitation of acuses. The ECHR and the Turkish Constitutional Court has declared the file was not investigated efficiently, however the murder remains unsolved. In 2019, news about the Tatvan Brigade Commander, Korkmaz Tağma has requested an access ban on the news concerning the incident. The Coup Attempt Media Case

Istanbul New Airport Workers

The trial of the workers and unionists, who were arrested for 2,5 months for having protested their bad working conditions and the ocupational homicides in the New Airport construction, has begun. According to the official records at least 52 workers died during the construction. The workers, who staged a protest against bad working conditions by saying "We Are Not Slaves" are being charged with "organizing illegal protests". It is the unjust and unlawful process that should be judged not the workers, who were taken into detention and later arrested....

Osman Kavala

Businessperson and human rights activist Kavala was arrested and detained on November 1st, 2017 in the context of the investigation on the coup attempt. The indictment is still not prepared.
